What is an SPL token?

SPL (Solana Program Library) token is the standard for fungible and non-fungible tokens on Solana. Each token has a mint address, decimals, and optional metadata (name, symbol, image) so wallets and explorers can display it correctly.

What is token metadata?

Metadata is the human-readable info (name, symbol, description, image URL) attached to your token. It is stored off-chain (e.g. on IPFS) and linked via a URI. Wallets and block explorers use it to show your token's name and icon.

What is IPFS and why do I need it?

IPFS is a decentralized storage network. Your token's image and metadata (name, symbol, description) are stored there so they remain available and immutable. Use the Upload metadata page to push your assets to IPFS and get a URL for the Create token step.

What's the difference between Devnet and Mainnet?

Devnet is for testing: transactions use fake SOL and don't cost real money. Mainnet is the real Solana network: you need real SOL for fees and your token will be live. Always test on Devnet first, then switch to Mainnet when you're ready.

How do I change the network (Mainnet vs Devnet)?

Click the gear (settings) icon in the header, then use the Network dropdown. Choose 'Mainnet' for real tokens or 'Devnet' for testing. Your wallet (e.g. Phantom) should also be set to the same network to sign transactions.

How do I get dev SOL for testing?

On Devnet you need dev SOL for fees. Use a faucet: search 'Solana devnet faucet' or go to solana.com/developers. Enter your wallet address and request airdrops. You can also use the built-in airdrop in Phantom when on Devnet. Dev SOL has no real value.

Which network should I use?

Use Devnet for testing (free, no real SOL). When you're ready for a real token, switch to Mainnet in the settings (gear icon in the header). You'll need SOL for transaction fees.

What wallet do I need?

Any Solana wallet that works in the browser (e.g. Phantom, Solflare). Connect via the 'Connect wallet' button in the header. Make sure the wallet is on the same network (Devnet or Mainnet) as selected in the app settings.

What can I do in Token utils?

Token utils let you mint more supply to a wallet (if you still have mint authority) and revoke mint or freeze authority so the token becomes fixed and non-upgradeable. Use these only when you're sure—revoking is permanent.

What are mint authority and freeze authority?

Mint authority allows creating new tokens (increasing supply). Freeze authority allows freezing token accounts. You can revoke either in Token utils to make the token immutable; after revoking, no one can mint or freeze anymore.

Can I create a token without metadata first?

Yes. On the Create token page you can leave the metadata URI blank and add it later (if your token is mutable). For a better experience in wallets and explorers, we recommend uploading metadata first and then creating the token with that URI.

How much SOL do I need on Mainnet?

You need a small amount of SOL for transaction fees (creating the token, uploading, minting). Fees are typically a fraction of a cent per transaction. Keep a bit extra for future mints or authority changes.

How long does it take to create a Solana token?

Is my token automatically listed on exchanges?
